Worldwide Protests mark anniversary of Fukushima

 Thousands of protesters Sunday took to the streets in Tokyo, across Japan and around the world on the first anniversary of the Fukushima disaster. Nineteen thousand people were killed when a 9.0 quake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan, sparking the Fukushima nuclear crisis. At an antinuclear gathering in the city of Koriyama in Fukushima, protesters called for all 54 of Japan's nuclear reactors to be scrapped. Read More

 

Climate Change Killing Endangered Species in the Seychelles

 Conservationists raised fears Monday that rare species such as the giant tortoise in the Seychelles are at severe risk from climate change. Climate change expert Rolph Payet said: “The seasons are merging, there’s more rain but in short bursts, with long dry periods,” adding:  “Drinking water dries up and the climate plays havoc with breeding and feeding patterns.” Read More

Pakistani Man Whose Father was Killed in Drone Strike to Sue British Intelligence Officials

 A British law firm said Friday it will sue Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague on behalf of a Pakistani man because British intelligence was used to assist US drone attacks. Lawyers for Noor Khan, whose father was killed by a US strike say civilian intelligence officers that pass intelligence to the US are not “lawful combatants,” and therefore cannot claim immunity from criminal law.  As UN Envoy Leaves, Massacre in Homs Intensifies

 Hours after the UN’s special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, left the country, activists reported Monday government forces killed nearly 50 women and children. Homs has been an opposition stronghold since the Syrian uprising began a year ago. Government forces have maintained a heavy assault on the city for weeks, trying to eradicate pockets of rebel fighters. Read More


 Egyptian Military Doctor Acquitted of Forced Virginity Tests

 In Egypt an army doctor was acquitted recently of carrying out forced "virginity tests"...  on female protesters last year, dealing a blow to activists and women involved in the case. Ahmed Adel was found not guilty of public indecency by a military court in Cairo. He was accused of performing the tests on seven women who had been arrested in Tahrir Square in March, 2011.  US military unveils non-lethal heat ray weapon

 The latest non-lethal weapon unveiled by the US military creates a sensation of unbearable, sudden heat. An Agence France Presse reporter said the effect was so repellant, the immediate instinct was to flee. Marine Colonel Tracy Taffola, director the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, said:  "You're not gonna see it, you're not gonna hear it, you're not gonna smell it: you're gonna feel it." Old Landsbanki sues PriceWaterhouseCoopers for ‘deliberate’ auditing errors

The failed Icelandic bank Old Landsbanki has subpoenaed international auditors PriceWaterhouseCoopers, accusing the company of creating accounts that misled the markets. The committee’s damages claim runs to hundreds of millions of dollars. The company is also accused of having known about Landsbanki’s precarious position at the end of 2007, nine months before it went under. Read More


Greece likely to need third bail-out

A senior European Central Bank official said Saturday a third bail-out for Greece cannot be ruled out, as the country's troika of lenders prepared to rubber-stamp its $170 billion second financial rescue. Germany's Wolfgang Schaeuble said it would be a “big mistake to give the impression the crisis has been resolved.” Alastair Winter, chief economist at Daniel Stewart & Co, said he was certain a third bail-out would be needed. Lynne has a 28 months sentence. She is now being held in jail after the Second Circuit ruled on her and the government's appeals on November 17, 2009. The sentence that Lynne has received is threatened, meaning it could go higher. Her supporters from around the world are mobilizing to show the steadfast support that this ‘life-long defender of the oppressed’ they say, has from the community, adding: “Lynne Stewart's good deeds throughout her life and the fact that she had been out since her arrest in 2002 with no incidents - her age, her health - all demand NO MORE TIME than she already has”.
