BP announced Friday it will pay $7.8 billion to compensate thousands of Gulf Coast residents and businesses harmed in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The tentative settlement is far short of initial estimates of $14 billion, and amounts to less than a third of the oil giant’s 2011 profits. A portion of the settlement will go to lawyers. The tentative deal does not address state lawsuits and federal claims under the Clean Water Act and Oil Pollution Act, which could cost BP a further $21 billion. The settlement has also little to do with environmental damage. BP could still face criminal charges related to the oil spill and be barred from receiving federal contracts. Eleven men died and more than 200 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf from the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in April 2010. Source
