Recently, a public outcry forced Amazon.com to remove over one hundred whale and dolphin meat products from its Japanese website. Consumers were outraged that the world's largest online retailer supported the killing of whales and dolphins. The website Change.org is circulating a petition to pressure Amazon to institute a permanent ban to protect the endangered animals. Read More

US Investigators Find 5 Soldiers Responsible for Burning Korans

US military investigators in Afghanistan say five soldiers were involved in burning copies of the Koran last week. The desecration of the Muslim holy books incited a week of protests that left at least 30 Afghans and six US soldiers dead. Officials said the five soldiers will be reprimanded, but it’s unlikely their punishment will satisfy most Afghans. Read More

Limbaugh Calls Woman's Health Advocate a “prostitute”

Right wing radio host Rush Limbaugh called Georgetown Law School student Sarah Fluke a “prostitute” this week after she argued birth control should be covered by health insurance at religious institutions. Fluke testified recently about Georgetown’s policy on contraception during an unofficial Congressional hearing on the contraceptive mandate in the nation’s healthcare law. Fluke was excluded from an official hearing at which all but one of the witnesses were men. Read More

EU summit: All but two leaders sign fiscal treaty

All but two of the EU's 27 leaders have signed a new treaty to enforce budget discipline within the bloc. The "fiscal compact" aims to prevent the 17 eurozone states running up huge debts like those which sparked the Greek, Irish and Portuguese bailouts. UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who with the Czechs refused to sign, said the summit had accepted his ideas for cutting red tape and boosting growth. Read More

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., said Thursday he and his investigators have evidence President Obama's...  birth certificate is a forgery. Keystone XL Won’t Reduce Your Gas Bill

Despite claims by Keystone XL supporters, experts say the tar sands pipeline will not bring down prices at US gas pumps.  The proposed pipeline, which would run from Canada to Texas, wouldn’t be built until 2014 and at the most would reduce prices by pennies. The US is currently a net exporter of oil. Read More

Florida Passes Prayer in Schools and Bans Sharia Law on same day

The Florida House Tuesday passed a bill to allow prayer in public schools. The ACLU and Anti-Defamation League believe the bill violates the separation of Church and State and have threatened legal action. Meanwhile, a second bill bans the use of “foreign law,” with an implicit focus on the dangers of Sharia law. The bill’s sponsor couldn’t point to a single case in Florida in which a judge had ruled on Sharia. Read More
