Obama signs multi-billion dollar jobs bill into law

Barack Obama Thursday signed a $17.6-billion employment package that includes infrastructure investments for highway construction and help for states to build schools. Eight million jobs have been lost since the recession started in December 2007. For the Obama administration, speeding recovery has become all the more urgent as the country faces midterm elections in November. Read more

Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan, UBS Charged With Derivatives Fraud

Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase and UBS have been charged with fraud linked to the sale of derivatives to the City of Milan. The banks allegedly misled the city on swaps that adjusted interest payments on $2.3 billion of loans. The probe may also affect cases in the U.S., where securities firms have faced charges for price-fixing and bid-rigging in the sale of derivatives to municipalities. Read more

Ex-NY bank president first accused of TARP fraud

The former president of New York's privately held Park Avenue Bank was arrested Monday on fraud charges, the first person accused of attempting to steal U.S. government bailout funds. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: "Charles Antonucci is the first person to be charged with attempting to defraud the TARP and we expect he will not be the last." Antonucci was released on a $2 million bond. Read more

Obama Veto Is Threatened on 2010 Intelligence Budget Measure

Barack Obama probably would veto legislation authorizing the next budget for U.S. intelligence agencies if the budget calls for a new investigation into the 2001 anthrax attacks. In February the FBI said the late Bruce Ivins, a government scientist, was behind the attacks. Anthrax-laced letters sent to lawmakers and news outlets just before passage of the Patriot Act killed five people. Read more

Chefs Call Proposed New York Salt Ban 'Absurd'

Some New York City chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking. The legislation would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation. Jeff Nathan, executive chef and co-owner of Abigael's on Broadway said: "Regulating restaurants will not solve this health issue." Scientists create fully-functioning, 3D invisibility cloak

Researchers have taken the world a step closer to Harry Potter's invisibility cape after they made an object disappear. A study published Thursday in the journal Science showed scientists from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and Imperial College London used the cloak to conceal a small bump on a gold surface. Researcher Nicholas Stenger said: "We put an object under a microscopic structure, a little like a reflective carpet," adding: "When we looked at it through a lens.. the bump became invisible." Junk Food Nearly as Addictive as Heroin

Junk food appears to be almost as addictive as heroin. According to a study by the Scripps Research Institute, researchers found rats fed a diet of junk food quickly became obese. Researchers electrically stimulated rats’ brain pleasure centers whenever they ran on a wheel. The rats eating junk food ran on the wheel longer, suggesting their pleasure centers had become less sensitive. Read more
