Pneumonic Plague Outbreak in China Follows Outbreak in Ukraine PDF Print E-mail

Friday, 06 November 2009 17:16

In China two people have died, a town of 10,000 people is under quarantine, and the area inside a 17-mile radius around it has been sealed to contain an outbreak of pneumonic plague. Two people have died from the highly contagious disease, one of the most virulent and deadly diseases on earth, usually fatal within 24 hours. It attacks the lungs and kills nearly everyone who catches it unless treated rapidly with antibiotics. A dozen people in the town of Ziketan have so far been infected. The disease spreads fast and is passed from person to person by coughing. Witnesses reported panic buying, people disinfecting homes and wearing face masks. Streets are deserted. Pneumonic plague is an even more powerful brother of the bubonic that wiped out a quarter of the population of 14th Century Europe. There are reports pneumonic plague is currently sweeping Ukraine.
