4-8 weeks left for diplomacy on Iran'

Iceland Modern Media Initiative PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 09 March 2010 21:10

Icelanders have developed what they call the "Iceland Modern Media Initiative", a proposal for sweeping modernization of laws concerning media and publishing. The initiative is designed "for Iceland to strongly position itself legally for protection of freedoms of expression and information." The new measures are in response to a phalanx of laws, gag orders and the threat of law suits which had a chilling effect on journalistic expression and which may have been a factor in allowing the ICESAVE banking scandal to occur. The Initiative, combines legislation provisions from around the world: whistle-blower laws and rules about Internet providers from the United States; source protection laws from Belgium; freedom of information laws from Estonia and Scotland, among others; and New York State’s law to counteract “libel tourism.”

The new law will protect investigative journalists, their sources and whistle blowers from anywhere in the world who publish in Iceland. Initially touted to make Iceland the "Switzerland of Bits" the proposal has already been introduced in Icelands Parliament, where it has 19 sponsors. The legislation is now in committee and scheduled for a vote in April or May. Also included in the proposal is the, "The Icelandic Freedom of Expression Award" to be awarded to courageous journalists and whistleblowers. Birgitta Jonsdottir, a member of Parliament and a sponsor of the initiative. said “They are trying to make everything opaque. We are trying to make it transparent.”

In 9-11 news The National Institute of Standards and Technology, last week refused a Freedom of Information request to provide copies of interviews with first responders about Barry Jennings and Michael Hess, two New York City officials who were trapped in Building 7. Jennings, the former Housing Authority Emergency Coordinator, reported that he and a colleague, Michael Hess, were blown back by a big explosion in Building 7 and that he saw the lobby of Building 7 had been gutted. Jennings also reported that he stepped over bodies inside Building 7, contradicting government claims no one died there. Jennings, who was threatened repeatedly after 9/11, died mysteriously on August 19, 2008, two days before release of the NIST Report that stated fires had mostly caused Building 7 to collapse and that no one had been killed in the building. George Soros- spokesman for hedge fund operator said he is guilty of no wrong-doing in connection with the financial upheaval effecting Greece and Europe, as quoted by the New York Times. But Zubi Diamond, author of the new book, Wizards of Wall Street, says the agenda of Soros and other short sellers is clear. Diamond says their purpose, is “to loot America and any foreign country which invested in America. Greece was one of them. Iceland was ravaged and annihilated.” Diamond says the economic crisis was deliberately engineered for profit and political gain and has resulted in the “looting” of $11 trillion from the U.S. economy. “Short selling” refers to investors, speculators and currency manipulators betting on the decline or collapse of a stock or currency through complex financial instruments handled mostly through secret off-shore accounts. For short sellers to make money, prices have to go down.
